Chapter 15 I Am Here Now
“You’re really pretty. Do you know how to bake pies?”
A few men were standing outside Calliope’s house with lecherous grins on their faces.
There were quite a huge number of villagers around at the time, but none of them dared intervene as the men were infamous for being ruthless thugs.
All they did was watch on from the side while blaming it on Calliope’s beauty and Dominic’s carelessly leaving her home alone.
Calliope’s heart was racing, and her face was turning pale. Even so, she did her best to appear
calm.
“I hear she’s from a wealthy family!”
“That makes sense! Rich girls like her don’t have to cook at home, so there’s no way she’d know how to bake pies!”
“Hey, new girl! You don’t know the rules around here, do you?”
The thug was ogling Calliope as he continued, “Women who marry into this village need to bake pies for every household over here! You’ve been here for quite some time now, but we haven’t received your pies!”
Calliope tried her best to keep her voice from trembling as she said, “Sorry, I didn’t know there. was such a rule. I’ll be sure to bake the pies and deliver them to everyone later. My husband is coming home soon, so you guys need to leave…”
She was about to close the door in the yard, but one of the thugs stopped it with his knee. The other two joined in and helped push against the door as well. Calliope’s hand slipped in her state of panic, and the thugs managed to shove the door wide open. Their eyes were filled with lust as they barged into the yard and eyed her from head to toe.
“Wow! Who would’ve thought a loser like Dominic would get so lucky with women, eh?”
The thugs were practically drooling as they slowly inched closer to her.
Disgusted to the core, Calliope instinctively crossed her arms in front of her chest as she glared cautiously at them.
She deliberately raised her voice a little as she shouted, “This is my house! Get out right now! My husband will be home soon, and you guys should know very well the kind of man he is!”
The men exchanged glances before breaking into vicious grins.

“Of course we do! He’s a coward who needs to use the bathroom every time he gets into a fight!”
“Dominic was so much of a loser that he would always take the fall for us at the police station. whenever we got into fights! I bet he never told you about that, huh?”
“We’re sorry we weren’t able to attend your wedding ceremony. How about we make it up to you right now, hmm?”
Having surrounded Calliope, the men reached out to touch her as they slowly closed in on her. Despite being scared out of her mind, Calliope recalled the moment Dominic hit the punching bag earlier that day.
She had never thrown a punch before, and yet, she somehow mustered the courage to swing her fists at the thugs as though they were punching bags.
The thugs flinched and backed away in shock, only to get turned on even more by her act of resistance.
“Oh? It looks like we’ve got a fighter here!”
Calliope then picked up a stick and waved it at them as she shouted, “Get out of my house right
now!”
“That stick is not going to do you any good, missy! You could end up hurting yourself if you’re not careful with it! Come on, we’ll show you the right way to handle a stick!” the thugs said with. menacing grins on their faces.
Calliope’s eyes teared up as fear, helplessness, and despair filled her heart at the same time.
Two of the thugs then started dragging her into the house.
Suddenly, the door to the yard was opened forcefully with a loud boom.
The thugs then received heavy blows to their heads before they even realized what was going on. Calliope was frozen in shock as she watched the thugs groan in pain while writhing about on the
floor.
The sunlight from outside the door silhouetted the man’s body, which exuded an icy–cold air of authority as he stood at the door.
The tears that Calliope had been fighting back with all her might come flowing out the moment she saw him, and she immediately threw herself into his arms.
“It’s fine. I’m here now,” Dominic whispered while gently running his hand through her hair.
He then told her to go inside and close the door.
Calliope did as told, but Dominic did not follow her into the house. A few seconds later, she heard

a series of dull thuds, which were followed by the thugs‘ screams of pain.
As she peered out the window, she saw Dominic beating the thugs up so badly that they were bruised and bleeding all over the ground.
Despite having stained the ground in the yard with their blood, Dominic’s anger had yet to be satiated. He then picked up the stick Calliope had used earlier and swung it at one of the thug’s legs.
“If you hara** my wife again, I’ll break more than just your leg!” Dominic shouted at the top of his
voice.
Calliope tried desperately to calm her racing heart as she watched the thugs flee the scene in fear.
Her lips moved when she saw Dominic enter the house with dried blood on his clothes, but the words seemed to be stuck in her throat.
“Did I scare you?” Dominic asked as he walked up to her and gently held her by the shoulders.
Calliope shook her head and reached out to hug him while resting her head against his chest.
Dominic felt his heart soften up when he saw her nuzzling against him.
“You’re a lot tougher than I thought. I didn’t expect you to swing that stick at those guys,” he said with a chuckle.
Calliope looked up at him as she exclaimed, “What else was I supposed to do? No one was willing to help me, and you weren’t home, so I had no other choice but to defend myself!”
“Yes, it’s my fault for leaving you at home all by yourself. I don’t think they’d dare come back here, though,” Dominic whispered.
Calliope let out a soft giggle as she buried her face in his chest.
Her heart started pounding like crazy when she accidentally felt the rock–hard muscles on his
chest.
Who would’ve thought he’d be so good at fighting? He managed to take all of those thugs down with just a few blows! Still, why did they say he used to be a weak coward?
“You should take a shower and get changed. I’ll get dinner ready,” Calliope said.
Dominic nodded and narrowed his eyes while staring at her.
“Is there something on my face?” Calliope asked in confusion.
“No. I just feel that you’re different from how they described you,” he replied with a smirk.

“How so?”
Dominic leaned in close and said, “Before I married you, people have been telling me that the Gingrich family’s eldest daughter is spoilt, has a bad temper, and doesn’t know how to do the
and chores at home. You, on the other hand, keep the house really clean, make delicious food, can handle problems calmly. I’m starting to wonder if you’re actually Penelope…”
Calliope’s face went pale as she stared at him in silence. After taking a moment to regain her composure, she replied with a forced smile, “O–Of course I am! Rumors are often far from the truth, so you shouldn’t listen to them. I am indeed Penelope of the Gingrich family. You married the right person, all right!”
Dominic simply let out a chuckle in response.
That’s fine. I can wait until the day she willingly confesses the truth to me.
Calliope had just made her way into the kitchen when someone knocked on the door urgently.
“Hey, Dominic! Are you home?“
