Chapter 17 Do You Think This Is Honorable
Calliope had a terrible time at the meeting that morning.
She constantly felt Jonah’s somewhat salacious gaze on her body. Meanwhile, she also felt Melissa staring daggers at her. The latter acted as if she wanted to shred Calliope to pieces.
Hence, Calliope immediately made up an excuse to leave the conference room the moment the meeting ended. She did not wait for Jonah to approach her.
Not long after she ran off, she heard Melissa’s voice from behind her. “What’s the matter with you? Well, aren’t you quite the seductress? I guess I should have expected that the leopard cannot change its spots.”
Calliope’s heart lurched.
She had just told Serena about the incident in the afternoon, and the latter had been startled too. Surely it could not be a coincidence. How did I manage to run into the two of them in such a huge company?
“You should handle them with care if you happen to run into them,” Serena advised in a low voice. “Cally, I’m currently not part of the sales department, so it’s difficult for me to speak up for you. Melissa’s uncle is a major shareholder in the company, so she’s used to having her way most of the time. Anyway, you’ll probably encounter some difficulties in the future. You must tread carefully!”
“Okay! Don’t worry.” Calliope smiled softly. “As long as I don’t make any mistakes, Melissa can’t do anything to me.”
That very afternoon, Melissa had specially given her a task.
“Here’s the list of attendees for the coffee break later. They’re all major clients of our company, so
you
should prepare adequately.”
Calliope nodded in response.
The coffee break was small in scale, as there were only about ten people on the list. However, she would have to strive for excellence in order to please the clients.
Melissa smirked. “By the way, you must pay extra attention to the food given to Sarah Dawson, the CEO of Dawn Group. She’s a tough woman, but she has a peanut allergy. Make sure her food doesn’t contain anything with peanuts in them.”
“All right. Lunderstand.”
Calliope took the list and walked away.
Although it was her first day at work, she did everything methodically and took care of everything in an orderly fashion. Soon, the venue for the coffee break was properly set up.
Everything was in order when the participants filed in.
Sighing in relief, Calliope stood by the side as she surveyed the scene. However, someone suddenly shrieked.
“Ms. Dawson has pa**ed out!”
Stunned, Calliope hurriedly ran over to check on the situation. Sure enough, Sarah was on the ground. Her eyes bulged as she struggled to breathe.
“What’s going on?” someone shouted. “We made sure to inform you Ms. Dawson is allergic to peanuts! Why is there peanut butter in this cupcake?”
Melissa came over, demanding sharply, “Who is the person who prepared the cupcakes? I made sure to emphasize Ms. Dawson’s peanut allergy! How can such a mistake happen?)
Calliope felt her breath choke as she met Melissa’s hatred–filled eyes.
It was only then she managed to grasp the situation. I’m being framed!
“Calliope, I entrusted the task to you! How could you make such a colossal mistake?”
Calliope bit her lip and kept quiet.
“Now’s not the time to argue about that!” Sarah’s a**istant was frantic. “Please call an ambulance! If this continues, she may actually die!”
The scene descended into chaos.
Composing herself, Calliope weaved through the crowd and came to a stop next to Sarah. She observed the woman for a moment before producing a small vial from her bag.
“Hurry, feed her this!”
“W–What’s this?”
“My brother also has a peanut allergy. I make sure to always carry this around in my bag.”
Calliope took a capsule from the vial, stuffed it into the other woman’s mouth, and forced her to
swallow it.
Before the ambulance had even arrived, Sarah was no longer gasping for breath, and her breathing gradually stabilized. The rash on her body was also no longer as severe.
Slowly, Sarah opened her eyes and glanced at Calliope. With some difficulty, she managed to
utter a few words. “T–Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it.” Feeling relieved, Calliope mopped the sweat on her forehead.
When the ambulance finally arrived, the crowd was a flurry of hands and feet as everyone tried to get Sarah into the vehicle. Eventually, everything calmed down.
With a dark expression, the super visor then called Calliope and Melissa to the office.
Calliope kept silent as Melissa recounted the whole incident animatedly.
“Calliope.” Melissa stood with her arms crossed around her chest and a triumphant expression on her face. “I reminded you repeatedly, but you refused to take my words seriously. You were the one who prepared the food. Were you trying to kill Ms. Dawson?”
“Why would I do such a thing? There’s no bad blood between us,” Calliope replied as she looked at Melissa calmly. “I don’t know why someone would swap out the cupcakes I had prepared.”
“What’s the meaning of this?”
“Look,” Calliope said as she produced the remnants of the cupcake Sarah had eaten earlier. “The casing is made of paper. These were not the cupcakes I prepared.”
The supervisor frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I bought the food for the coffee break from the bakery opposite the company. In order to differentiate the ones with and without peanut butter, I made sure to tell them to use an aluminum foil casing for the ones without. However, the one Ms. Dawson ate had a paper casing. Moreover, I did not find any cupcakes in aluminum foil casing when I surveyed the venue earlier. Someone must’ve swapped out the peanut–free cupcakes!”
Melissa’s expression darkened. She shouted angrily, “Are you trying to frame me?”
“Frame you?” Calliope smiled. “Ms. Muller, I only said that someone had swapped the food. I did not accuse you of being the culprit. Why are you so agitated?”
“Y–You…” Melissa glared at Calliope hatefully as she clenched her fists tightly.
“I made sure to differentiate between the cupcakes, Calliope declared firmly. “If you don’t believe my words, you can check with the bakery staff or even the surveillance footage. Although I’m new here, I can’t stand by idly when I’m being wrongly accused. I request a thorough investigation into this matter!”
Since it had come to this, it was obvious who was the guilty party.
The supervisor’s expression turned gloomy. Melissa was obviously the culprit, but since Sarah ended up being fine, there was no need to get on the shareholder’s niece’s bad side for some
newbie.
“Calliope, I’ll handle this,” he declared authoritatively. “You may leave. I need to speak with Ms. Muller.”
Calliope nodded in acknowledgment and stepped out.
Before Melissa could utter another word, the supervisor ordered sternly, “That’s enough.”
“Huh? What-”
“Do you think you did an honorable thing? If it weren’t for Calliope’s medicine earlier, something terrible would have occurred. Do you think you could have dealt with the subsequent repercussions?”
Melissa turned pale as a sheet.
“Don’t think you can do whatever you want in the company just because your uncle is a shareholder. There’s a limit to my tolerance. If you go too far, I’m afraid I will no longer turn a blind eye to your antics. You’d better behave yourself.”
Furious at being unable to gain the upper hand and ending up reprimanded by the supervisor, Melissa grew even angrier at Calliope, the cause of all her troubles.
Thanks to Melissa’s efforts, Calliope was unable to secure any sales in the entire month she was here. Naturally, she became a bad example at their meetings.
