Chapter 18 Take Care Of You Henceforth
“The sales department is the most important department in the company.” Melissa deliberately made suide remarks during the company meeting. “There are individuals who truly have no talent in sales. In that case, it’s best if they don’t cling to the position and give the opportunity to someone more capable instead. Our company isn’t the place for playing around. Everyone needs to contribute. People who have made zero sales and are content with receiving just a basic salary should think long and hard about leaving.”
For the rest of the day, Calliope kept her head downcast, and the wrinkle between her brows showed no signs of easing.
After an exhausting day, she returned home to find Dominic sprawled on the couch with his phone in hand like a man without a care in the world. The kitchen was completely empty. They did not even have drinking water.
At that moment, the frustration Calliope had kept in check the entire day bubbled over.
“You… haven’t made dinner?”
Dominic looked up from his phone screen in surprise.
Calliope stood before him with flushed cheeks. Her breathing was laborious, and her chest heaved as she glared at him in disbelief.
Although it was worded as a question, it sounded more like an irritated wife who was annoyed with her husband.
Dominic’s heart stirred as something suddenly occurred to him.
“What’s the matter?” He got up from the couch and stared at her innocently. “You were always the one who made dinner ever since we got married.”
Calliope stilled for a moment before biting her lips.
Dominic presented an imposing figure as he stood in front of her. He towered over her, causing her to lose her momentum.
Calliope was usually an easygoing person. Hence, she wasn’t truly mad at Dominic.
However…
“Yeah, you’re right,” Calliope replied softly as she lowered her gaze. “I’m usually the one who makes dinner, but I’ve been busy with work… Could you perhaps do part of the housework? After all, I’m not the only one who lives here. Since I came back so late tonight, couldn’t you have helped with some food preparation even if you can’t cook? Do I have to do everything by myself?”
Dominic narrowed his eyes.
This is the first time she’s gotten mad at me since we got married. Honestly speaking, she’s not yelling at me or anything. She’s only grumbling slightly.
A woman who was angry but was afraid to show her anger was adorable. It made him want to tease her a little.
“Oh.” Dominic nodded. “You don’t like that I’m unemployed and being a burden to you.”
“That…” Stunned, Calliope hurriedly exclaimed, “That’s not what I meant!”
Dominic leaned in with a smile on the corner of his lips. Unbeknownst to himself, an intimate look glinted in the depths of his eyes.
“What do you mean then?”
“Dominic.” Calliope breathed in as she stared at him with a serious expression. “I’ve already made up my mind to live with you for the rest of my life since we got married. You’re my husband, so how could I feel that way? Even if you remain unemployed for the rest of your life, I promise to take care of you always.”
Her voice became lower the more she spoke. She struggled inwardly, worried that her words would wound his pride.
He was a man, after all, and they were a prideful bunch. To someone like Dominic, a man who had a fairly questionable track record, those words were probably taboo.
“What did you just say?” Dominic quirked his lips, desperately trying to prevent her from seeing how close to laughter he was. “You’ll take care of me?”
“Yeah. Is there a problem?”
Dominic met her gaze. Her beautiful and large eyes were pure and crystal clear. He couldn’t control the shiver in his heart as he gazed at her.
Calliope added, “While it’s more traditional for the man to be the one working while the woman stays at home, we are no longer in feudal times. Women are allowed to work, so it doesn’t matter if it’s the husband or wife who takes care of their home. However, it should be a joint endeavor. Nothing can stop a couple if they are of one mind!”
Stunned, Dominic began to chuckle.
At a glance, Calliope may seem to be weak and soft–spoken, but she’s more opinionated than anyone else. This is the first time I’ve heard a woman say she’d take care of her man!
Since she had said so, he decided to follow her wishes.
